Federal Minister launches ASPREE in Adelaide

The Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing described the ASPREE study as an incredibly important piece of medical research during the official opening of the new ASPREE Clinical Trial Centre in Adelaide on September 21, 2012.

He said the ASPREE study ticked a number of boxes: it addressed a fundamental health challenge –diseases of ageing, it was of international standing bringing ‘a level of excellence and critical mass’ to the study and it took a ‘wholistic’ look at the health of older Australians. “..leveraging off one project to understand more about a range of conditions, I think is a wonderful way to go forward in the future,” said Minister Butler.

Around 50 people attended the launch at the University of Adelaide, including Principal Investigator in Australia, Prof John McNeil, Chief Investigator in Adelaide, Prof Nigel Stocks, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, Prof Steve Wesselingh, as well as currently enrolled and potential ASPREE participants.

The Adelaide team aims to recruit over 1000 participants from the Adelaide and surrounding regions before December 2013.
