What is a sub-study?
A sub-study is a detailed investigation into a research question not addressed by the principal trial. It is usually undertaken in a sub-group or sub-population of all participants in the principal trial and it may involve additional measurements or data collection. ASPREE is in a unique position to offer the opportunity for participants to enrol in additional sub-studies, each researching specific health issues, such as age-related hearing loss.
Our sub-studies provide invaluable information that will complement the main ASPREE study which we would not otherwise be able to collect. We are extremely grateful to all our participants for enrolling in sub-studies. Without their help we would not be able to answer important questions related to healthy ageing.
Why participate in an ASPREE sub-study?
Results from ASPREE sub-studies will become important determinants on the overall benefit/risk analysis of daily low dose aspirin for the primary prevention of disease in older people.
- The information will help show the interrelationship between factors that affect how we age.
- Sub-studies offer different opportunities and experiences – from answering questionnaires to undertaking hearing tests, eye examinations and MRI scans.
- Our sub-studies are completely voluntary, free and can provide a report to physicians about a clinically significant finding.
- Each sub-study has ethics approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).
