Congratulations to all.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>In 2013 the ASPREE Trial:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Reached and exceeded the original recruitment target of 12,500 Australian ASPREE\u00a0participants in September. Due to the success of the trial, the new Australian recruitment target was set to 16,500 participants<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Had enrolled over 2,000 Australian GPs as associate investigators to the trial<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Phone screened for eligibility the 60,000th person to respond to their letter of invitation<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Had posted almost half a million letters to ASPREE participants and potential participants<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Made the 100,000th follow-up call to an ASPREE participant<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Collected biosamples, ie blood samples from the 9,000th participant to enrol in the ASPREE Healthy Ageing Biobank, an <a href=\"\/aus\/about-the-aspree-project\/sub-studies\/\">ASPREE sub-study<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Processed the 21,000th ALSOP (<strong>A<\/strong>SPREE\u00a0<strong>L<\/strong>ongitudinal\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong>tudy of\u00a0<strong>O<\/strong>lder\u00a0<strong>P<\/strong>ersons) questionnaire returned\u00a0by almost 90% of ASPREE participants to help identify factors that influence healthy ageing<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Enrolled the 1000th participant in the ASPREE-SNORE sub-study investigating whether sleep apnoea affects thinking and memory and if aspirin can slow associated changes in small blood vessels in the brain<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Enrolled over 70 participants per month to undergo retinal photography as part of the ASPREE-AMD study, which is examining the effect of aspirin on age-related macular degeneration (AMD)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Travelled more than 150,000 km in the ASPREE Biobuses, enabling older people in regional and rural areas to participate in clinical research<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Commissioned two ASPREE\u00a0RetCam Vans, vehicles specially fitted with a retinal camera for the ASPREE-AMD sub-study<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Initiated new sub-studies to determine the effect of aspirin on specific conditions: ASPREE-KNEE (aspirin and osteoarthritis), ASPREE-NEURO (aspirin and microvascular changes in the brain), ACES (ASPREE Cancer Endpoints Study \u2013 aspirin and cancer) and ASPREE-Antisepsis (aspirin and infection)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Commenced<a href=\"\/aus\/site-locations\/\"> recruitment<\/a> in Mildura, the Sapphire Coast and in Wollongong<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Presented to 80 community organisations and conducted several study updates, reaching over 5,700 participants, friends, families and interested older people<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Was awarded $2.9 million from the <a href=\"\/aus\/about-us\/funding-and-collaborators\">National Cancer Institute<\/a> (US) to collect a 3 year follow up sample of blood from participants in the ASPREE Healthy Ageing Biobank<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Was awarded $1.5 million from the <a href=\"\/aus\/about-us\/funding-and-collaborators\">Victorian Cancer Agency<\/a> to support clinical trial centres in regional Victoria<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Is on track to complete recruitment by 2014<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read a round-up of the extraordinary year that 2013 was for the ASPREE trial.
