Melbourne, \u00a020 October 2014:<\/em>\u00a0 The use of aspirin to prevent cancer will be discussed by experts at a symposium in Melbourne today.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Leading healthcare professionals will discuss the scientific evidence for and against the use of aspirin for the chemoprevention of cancer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n With the rising importance of disease prevention, researchers are looking at how aspirin may provide an important addition to other medical approaches to address the challenge.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n The symposium, sponsored by the\u00a0CSIRO<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Monash University<\/a>, will hear from world-leading researchers working in the field of aspirin and cancer prevention.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Professor Carlo Patrono from the Catholic University, Rome, is the keynote speaker for the event and he will discuss the mechanisms of action by which aspirin may have a protective effect.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Attendees will also learn of the advantages and potential risks\u00a0of regular aspirin consumption, and how these impact on aspirin\u2019s current and future use in cancer prevention and management.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Other topics to be discussed will be the cost\/benefit of aspirin-based cancer chemoprevention.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n The\u00a0ASP<\/strong>irin in\u00a0R<\/strong>educing\u00a0E<\/strong>vents in the\u00a0E<\/strong>lderly (ASPREE) clinical trial led by Monash University in Australia, and its associated Healthy Ageing Biobank developed under CSIRO\u2019s Flagship Collaboration Clusters program, will also be outlined.
