{"id":5086,"date":"2015-09-16T10:58:10","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T10:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aspree.org\/aus\/?p=5086"},"modified":"2021-08-23T02:23:28","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T02:23:28","slug":"lack-of-evidence-excludes-elderly-in-us-draft-aspirin-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aspree.org\/aus\/lack-of-evidence-excludes-elderly-in-us-draft-aspirin-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Lack of Evidence Excludes Elderly in US Draft Aspirin Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leading US health authority releases aspirin recommendations to prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer in middle-aged<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The US Preventive Services Task Force\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/Page\/Document\/draft-recommendation-statement\/aspirin-to-prevent-cardiovascular-disease-and-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(USPSTF<\/a>) yesterday proposed that aspirin should be taken by people to prevent cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke) as well as colon cancer \u2013 but only if you are aged between 50 and 70 years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThe Task Force found that taking aspirin can help 50 to 69 year-olds, who are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, prevent heart attacks and stroke, as well as help prevent colorectal cancer, if taken for at least 10 years,\u201c\u00a0the task force says in its <a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/aspirincvdcancerdraftrsbulletin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draft recommendation bulletin<\/a>. Outside that age range, they found insufficient evidence on the\u00a0balance of benefit and risk\u00a0to draft recommendations<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Melbourne-based oncologist and <a href=\"\/aus\/about-us\/\">ASPREE<\/a> cancer researcher,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wehi.edu.au\/people\/peter-gibbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Professor Peter Gibbs <\/a>(pictured), says the report highlights the under-representation of older people in available aspirin research and the importance of the ASPREE (ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly) study to future health care.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\">\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"280\" height=\"280\" class=\"wp-image-5098\" src=\"https:\/\/aspree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/peter-gibbs-18-pp.jpg\" alt=\"Caucasian man with brown hair, glasses and wearing a dark suit, sits at a desk with a stethoscope draped around his neck\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\r\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">&#8220;Older people may have the most to gain from aspirin, but their age also puts them at greater risk of adverse effects; nobody yet knows the aspirin balance for healthy older people.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><br \/>\u201cWe know the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer increases with age, so the potential benefits of aspirin are there for older people, however as the USPSTF noted, age is the strongest independent risk factor for adverse effects, such as bleeding. Older people may have the most to gain from aspirin, but their age also puts them at greater risk of adverse effects; nobody yet knows the aspirin balance for\u00a0healthy older people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The ASPREE trial will, for the first time, weigh those potential benefits versus the risks and its findings will ultimately contribute to health recommendations by influential policy makers, such as the USPSTF,\u201d said Prof Gibbs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The USPSTF members developed the recommendations after a series of reviews of available aspirin studies for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer and risk factors.
