{"id":4672,"date":"2017-06-15T10:06:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T10:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aspree.org\/aus\/?p=4672"},"modified":"2021-08-02T08:41:33","modified_gmt":"2021-08-02T08:41:33","slug":"uk-aspirin-study-on-gi-bleeding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aspree.org\/aus\/uk-aspirin-study-on-gi-bleeding\/","title":{"rendered":"UK aspirin study on GI bleeding"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Daily aspirin users might need a PPI<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4927\" src=\"https:\/\/aspree.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/elderly_taking_pills_WEB6-mintues.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Elderly patients taking daily aspirin after a stroke or MI (heart attack) should be given PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) to reduce the risk of bleeding.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This is the conclusion of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(17)30770-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lancet study of 3166 patients<\/a>, which found the risk of internal bleeding is far higher than was previously thought.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Compared with younger patients, older aspirin users were 10 times more likely to experience disabling or fatal gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, the research shows.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The proportion of study participants suffering bleeds that required hospital admission rose from 1.5% a year for those under 65 to 3.5% for those aged 75-84.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For very elderly patients, over 85, the annual bleed rate reached 5%.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Doctors are now being advised to prescribe PPIs alongside aspirin to reduce the risk.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>While it\u2019s been known for some time that aspirin increases the risk of bleeding for elderly patients, this study provides a much clearer understanding of the size of the increased risk, and the severity and consequences of bleeds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cOur findings raise questions about the balance of risk and benefit of long-term daily aspirin use in people aged 75 or over if a proton-pump inhibitor is not co-prescribed,\u201d says lead author Professor Peter Rothwell from the University of Oxford.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Most of the patients in the study were taking low-dose (75mg) aspirin. Only a few were being treated with a different drug, clopidogrel.
